Non Violent Resistance, or NVR, is an innovative approach to extreme behavioural issues. This can include violence in the home, drug use, controlling behaviour, learning difficulties, or neuro-development differences like Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. More recently it is being employed to help tackle other behavioural difficulties such as online addictions like those with gaming and online gambling.
NVR looks to expand parents’ and carers’ understanding of what is behind behaviours and how situations escalate to the point of behaviours like violence. One of the biggest tools for parents is the NVR model does away with the reward and punishment dyad that most other approaches employ. Instead NVR will meet you where you are, and not place any blame on parents for why situations are the way they are.
NVR gets behind the behaviours and looks at what is causing these escalations, like unmet needs, blocked care, or trauma, and how we can work to create long lasting behavioural changes through the way we meet the child. It also focuses on how we can raise our parental presence and look after ourselves so we’re able to be there to support our children.
